After attending Parker Junior College, he moved on to New York University, where he studied business before making the switch to theater. He began his acting career soon after, appearing in off-Broadway productions and on various television projects. His life changed, however, after working on director Martin Ritt's television adaptation of W. Somerset Maugham's "Of Human Bondage" (1951).
