Gordon was born in Illinois, and was educated at the prestigious Lakeside School in Seattle before attending Yale University to study architecture. While at Yale, the tech-savvy Gordon taught himself film editing on the Avid digital editing system, and was active in the improvisational comedy group The Exit Players. After college he made a few original short films, leading to his involvement with the country-rock group The Dixie Chicks and their documentary "Shut Up and Sing" (2006), for which he served as cinematographer.
