Born Michael Edward Palin in the Broomhill ward of Sheffield, England, he was one of two children born to Edward Moreton Palin, a steel engineer, and Mary Lockhart Ovey. Edward Palin suffered from a pronounced stammer, which his son would later adopt to great effect in "A Fish Called Wanda" and other projects. A shy boy, he nevertheless developed an interest in acting after appearing as Martha Cratchit in a production of "A Christmas Carol" at Birkdale Preparatory School.
