Born in 1961 in the English town of Letchworth in Hertfordshire, Simon West began his career at the age of 20 as an apprentice film editor for the BBC. From 1981 to 1985, he was involved with a number of award-winning documentaries and series, including an adaptation of Charles Dickens' "Bleak House" (1985). At the end of his tenure, West left the BBC to work as a freelance director, and after receiving a grant from the Arts Council of Great Britain, filmed a documentary called "Dolly Mixtures" (1983).
