Born Barbara Goldbach on Aug. 27, 1947 to an Austrian Jewish father and an Irish Catholic mother, she attended a Catholic all-girls school. Bach regarded herself as a tomboy, but her considerable beauty suggested career possibilities as a model, so she left her education behind at age 16 to work for the Ford Modeling Agency.
