Born Elizabeth June Thornburg on Jan. 26, 1921 in Battle Creek, MI, her early years bordered on the Dickensian. Her father, railroad foreman Percy Thornburg, deserted Hutton when she was two, leaving Hutton, her sister Marion, and mother Mabel to fend for themselves. The family would not learn of his whereabouts until 1939, when a telegram informed them that he had taken his own life. To support her children, Mabel Thornburg ran illegal taverns, or "speakeasies" throughout Michigan, from which they were frequently rousted by police.
