Born Quincy Delight Jones, Jr., on the south side of Chicago, IL on March 14, 1933, he was the son of semi-professional baseball player and carpenter Quincy Jones, Sr., and his wife, Sarah Francis Wells, an apartment manager and bank executive. Jones' mother suffered from schizophrenia, and spent much of his early years in mental hospitals, which created a distance between them that would not be repaired until his adulthood.
