Ready for the World is an R&B band from Flint, Michigan, who hit the height of their success during the mid to late 1980s with a series of hit singles that fused pop, soul, and dance music into their sound. The band was founded by vocalist Melvin Riley and guitarist Dean Sorensen. The duo went on to recruit guitarist Gordon Strozier, keyboardist Gregory Potts, percussionist Willie Triplett, bassist John Eaton and drummer Gerald Valentine. The band began performing while still in high school, entering local talent shows and playing at local venues.
