Yazoo, known as Yaz in the United States, was a British synthpop duo from Basildon, Essex. The duo was formed in late 1981 by Vince Clarke and Alison Moyet. Clarke had previously been the main songwriter and keyboard player for Depeche Mode. Yazoo was signed to Mute Records in the United Kingdom and to Sire Records in the United States. Yazoo was renamed Yaz for the US market because the name was already in use by a small American rock band. Their debut single, “Only You,” was released in 1982 and peaked at #2 on the U.K. Singles chart.
