Born Hugh Marston Hefner in Chicago, IL on April 9, 1926, he was the son of Glenn and Grace Hefner, whose ultraconservative attitudes - they were direct descendants of Massachusetts' Puritan governor William Bradford - had a direct influence on their son's future career path. A decidedly average student, Hefner's interests lay outside the classroom, where he devoted himself to publishing a school newspaper, as well as writing and drawing cartoons.
