DVD Review: The Doobie Brothers - 'Live At The Greek Theatre'
Originally filmed as a TV special on the last night of the Doobie Brothers’ 1982 Farewell Tour, the Doobie Brothers: Live at the Greek Theatre is nothing short of a must-see, and must-own, DVD, because when it comes to the night’s set list and bonus content, it doesn’t get much better.
The Doobie Brothers: Live at the Greek Theatre is packed with hit after hit, one right after another, beginning with the opener “Listen to the Music,” which only marks the beginning of the night’s festivities. When you press play on this DVD, be prepared to be entertained start to finish, because there’s a good chance a better Doobie Brothers set list has ever been put together (well, that depends on personal taste probably). Michael McDonald’s influence on the band is felt up and down this DVD through hits like “Takin’ It to the Streets,” “Minute by Minute,” “China Grove,” and “What a Fool Believes,” and while his vision of the band itself is a point of argument, there is no arguing the fact that he made the Doobie Brothers a very viable entity. Original singer/songwriter Tom Johnston rejoins the band onstage for the closer “Listen to the Music,” which the crowd overwhelmingly appreciates, but by the time he walks out onto stage, the Doobie Brothers: Live at the Greek Theatre is already worth the price of admission.
And that’s not even counting the bonus content, which features five more live performances – “Little Darling (I Need You),” “One Step Closer,” “Dependin’ on You,” “Real Love” and “No Stoppin’ Us Now.” Add to that 30 minutes of interviews with the band filmed just before the show as well as an informative full color eight-page booklet and you have the complete package of the Doobie Brothers: Live at the Greek Theatre.
The Doobie Brothers: Live at the Greek Theatre finds the band during one of their all-time best live performances, and given all that’s included; this DVD release comes out far superior to the original television broadcast.
