'General Hospital' Star Kelly Thiebaud On The Rise

Kelly Thiebaud has kept General Hospital fans wondering what she'll do next as the prickly Dr. Britt Westbourne. As GH celebrates its 50th anniversary this season, BFTV took the opportunity to get to know the actress behind the blackmailing doctor, and unsurprisingly, she's much more amenable than her alter ego.
"Playing Britt has just been a good time. Something you can't do as an actor is judge your character, but it's very easy to do that. At times I'd catch myself [saying] 'I can't understand why Patrick would want to be with me! I'm a horrible person!' But she's so fun," Kelly said with a laugh. "I'm so blessed to play someone so interesting and so layered and so expressive."
"Recently, my mother got revealed and that was probably something that I'd been waiting for since I got on a contract," she continued. "I wanted to show the audience something other than this kind of bitchy, mean, selfish, conniving person and I'm really glad that slowly these layers are being shown." As far as what's ahead, "There's some things that happen at the Nurses' Ball that I am very excited about!"
There have been rumblings about the decline of soap operas, as recent years have seen a few of the long-running series cancelled only to move to daytime, including ABC's own All My Children. Asked for her opinion on the state of the genre, "Honestly, I understand how some of them have fallen off, [but] I am not at all concerned with my show," Kelly said. "The writers have done such a good job at creating different characters. different storylines. General Hospital has changed from what it was five, six years ago. Although there's not as many people who watch daytime, I think we're going to be around for at least five years."
Her regular role on the series is the next step in a varied career for Kelly; in addition to acting, she has also modeled and appeared in music videos for David Guetta. "I just know ever since I was young I was always entertaining doing all sorts of things," she explained. "I didn't know exactly that acting was something I was going to pursue. It took me a long time and a lot of hardship to get to the place I'm at right now. But I got started doing commercials, and then I did some music videos for David Guetta, and I went and traveled overseas for modeling one last time, and when I came back it was like a lightbulb went off. It was just constant opportunities that were presenting themselves to me."
"Everything has confirmed that I made the right decision to move away from home and pursue this," she added. "It's so much fun doing what I do. I get to play all day long. It's not an easy lifestyle by any means; it's not for everyone, but you take the bad with the amazing."
For those who want to look beyond General Hospital to see more of her, Kelly has two suggestions. The first is a recent short film that she starred in called 'The Time,' which was shot in just two days. "We got involved in the Los Angeles 48 Hour Film Festival," she explained. It was very insane and we did it, and the product that came from that is so beautiful and amazing. We ended up winning runner-up at the festival and I ended up winning runner-up for best actress. It's a great story and a great piece." You can view the short in its entirety below.
Kelly also has another project ahead. "I do have a movie coming out that's going to be good," she said. "It's called Grace Unplugged and I play a kind of jaded, dark pop star who's sold her soul to get fame."
While she enjoys her current role as Britt Westbourne, there are plenty of other things Kelly would love to do in her future. "I'm just beginning. This is just the beginning for me," she continued. "Movies is where I'm headed and where I've always wanted to go. I kind of want to do it all. I've got a big sports background so doing any sort of action film is definitely at the top of my list. I love making people laugh so I want to do comedy. I just want to do everything I possibly can to entertain.
"I'm dying to work with Clint Eastwood. He's a great director, and I love his style, and of course he is Clint Eastwood. Having that opportunity would be fantastic," she added. "All the big directors, of course, every actor wants to work with. I want to work with Tom Hanks, Mel Gibson, Meryl Streep. You want to surround yourself with the best because that's how you learn."
Which leads her to reflect on what she wants to accomplish with a still-developing career. "I think it's just goals that I have and dreams that I have in my head that I know I can accomplish. I can't say it's anyone else's opinion but my own," she said. "It's just about being fulfilled, I think, and just being a good person, honestly. Doing what I love to do and being free in what I'm doing. Always challenging myself and not giving up on something just because it wasn't easy to do. Successful, to me, is being able to be a working actor and being able to work on projects I'm passionate about."
With her positive energy and commitment to her craft, Kelly is well on her way to a long career. She might be playing a woman audiences love to hate, but there's plenty to love about her.
