Jaime Murray wants to suck your blood. The Defiance star takes on the role of vampire villainess in Fright Night 2: New Blood, the direct-to-video sequel which follows 2011's Fright Night remake. Jaime recently joined BFTV to chat about her role as professor by day, killer by night Gerri Dandridge, and if it really is more fun to play the antagonist.
"I think it was enormous fun," she told us. "There's something about, in a horror movie, having to be scared all the time. I've done that too. I've been the victim in horror movies before. And I definitely think I prefer playing the aggressor.
"Although I was actually quite surprised that it affected me so much," she added. "I don't know whether it was because I arrived in Romania and went straight into night shoots - whether a certain degree of sleep deprivation contributes to that - or [it was] just playing a bad character. I'm not even playing a human. I'm playing someone who's just out for blood, really. [Co-stars] Will [Payne] and Sacha [Parkinson] were such wonderful actors, and so sweet as well - I actually felt quite mean sometimes!"
Since she was stepping into a sequel, did Jaime go and familiarize herself with what had come before? "Oh, yeah, of course," she said. "As an actor, you kind of do as much research, well I do anyway, as I can, whether it's books or watching films. Not even necessarily within the same franchise. Just films in that genre. I had a wealth of information and points of reference."
That included brushing up on her history, too. "One of the things I really liked about the movie was that [director] Eduardo [Rodriguez] really wanted to re-tell the story and use the comedy and horror elements, but he also wanted to take it a bit further and infuse it with other elements," Jaime explained, specifically pointing us toward the tale of Hungarian Countess Elizabeth Bathory. "She actually got into a lot of trouble for killing possibly over 600 women and torturing them," she said. "We used her story as basis for some blood bathing in our movie. It was really cold and there I was being drenched in very, very sticky blood!"
The actress is a familiar face to TV audiences, from her starring role as Stacie Monroe on Hustle to now her current gig as Stahma Tarr on Defiance. "I've been really lucky that I've been on shows that have had really loyal and committed fan bases," she reflected. "One of my first jobs here was Dexter, which I went into not really knowing anything about. It hadn't even aired in the UK.
"I would say on Defiance, which I'm shooting at the moment, it's really interesting playing an alien," she continued. "I didn't really know until I started playing her that by examining what it is to be alien, it makes you re-examine what it is to be human. The sci-fi genre is a great genre for examining really important issues. It's a complex world that we're trying to create, and this season is just getting really weird and really wonderful." Defiance is slated to return to SyFy in June 2014.
And while she might be smashing at portraying a horror villain, don't ask Jaime to watch any scary movies with you. "I'm such a wimp. I'm the worst person to ask," she laughed. "In order to calm my own nerves, I'll talk through the suspenseful bits. When I was growing up, I didn't know how sensitive I was to these kind of movies. My friends would all put on movies we weren't meant to be watching, like the Nightmare on Elm Street movies. And then I'd kind of have to sleep with the lights on!"
