Comedy Central Cuts Jeffrey Ross' 'Dark Knight' Massacre Joke

August 6th, 2012 3:07pm EDT

Jeffrey Ross Comedy Central lets comedians get away with quite a bit during their roasts, but Jeffrey Ross went too far. In the roast of Roseanne Barr, Ross (who went dressed up as Joe Paterno) made a joke about the killing spree in Aurora, Colorado.

During his time on stage, Ross made a few jokes towards Seth Green. On the topic of Green's red hair, Ross drew a connection between it and the dyed hair of James Holmes - who shot up a theater in Colorado during a premiere show of The Dark Knight Rises.

"Seth, congratulations. This is actually a great night for you ... you haven’t gotten this much attention since you shot all those people in Aurora. ... I’m kidding. You are not like James Holmes. At least he did something in a movie theater that people remember!"

Comedy Central says the joke will be cut from the August 12 broadcast. Ross later told NBC News, "Yes, I crossed a line, and that is what the roasts are about. That’s what Roseanne is about -- unapologetic comedy. If I had held back, I would have done her a disservice."
