Jeremy Renner In 'Bourne Legacy' And 10 Other Franchise Recasts

The Bourne Legacy Jeremy Renner isn't playing Jason Bourne, but he's taking over the Bourne franchise for Matt Damon. Renner's also not the first actor or actress to become the new face of a franchise. Here are 10 other franchise recasts:

Bruce Banner - Eric Bana/Edward Norton/Mark Ruffalo: Bana signed for three Hulk films, but was replaced by super fan Norton when Marvel re-acquired the rights. Norton re-wrote The Incredible Hulk and starred in a hit, but was unable to come to a deal when a role in The Avengers was available. Ruffalo filled in, and was given positive reviews.

Rachel Dawes - Katie Holmes/Maggie Gyllenhaal: There are a few theories out there as to why Holmes turned down a sequel offer after starring in Batman Begins, ranging from Scientology to not liking the fate of her character in The Dark Knight. Maggie did a superb job in the sequel.

Harvey Dent - Billy Dee Williams/Tommy Lee Jones/Aaron Eckhart: Billy Dee Williams signed on to play Dent in Batman and then Two Face in Batman Returns. However, he was written out of the sequel, as Returns was chock full of villains already. Then, Joel Schumacher paid Williams to not be in Batman Forever, instead giving the Dent role to Tommy Lee Jones. Eckhart broke up the "three name" streak when he played a brilliant Harvey Dent in Dark Knight.

Jack Ryan - Alec Baldwin/Harrison Ford/Ben Affleck: Tom Clancy's book protagonist has been in all four films based on his novels: The Hunt for Red October, Patriot Games, Clear & Present Danger, and The Sum of All Fears. Baldwin passed on the movie sequels, and Harrison Ford was happy to accept. After several years they decided to continue with the character and cast Ben Affleck.

Jim Rhodes (War Machine) - Terrence Howard/Don Cheadle: Although War Machine made his debut in Iron Man 2, the militarized and heavy weapon version of Iron Man holds great significance in the comic universe. Rumor has it Howard wanted too much dough, and Cheadle was given only a few hours to consider the role. Cheadle is set to return in Iron Man 3.

James Bond - 22 films, 6 actors: Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan, Daniel Craig have all played 007 over the last 50 years. The casting of the next Bond gets more attention than the debate over who will host the next Summer Olympics.

Felix Leiter, James Bond's CIA informant - 9 films of the Bond series, 7 actors: A character that represents the "special relationship" between the UK and the USA, Leiter has made a recent comeback in the recent Daniel Craig films after being absent from the Pierce Brosnan run. Jack Lord, Cec Linder, Rik Van Nutter, Norman Burton, David Hedison, and John Terry have all played the character, and Jeffrey Wright appears to have the role until a new Bond is chosen.

Alex Murphy (Robocop) - Peter Weller/Robert Burke: Weller was the iconic Robocop, but he did not want to be typecast as the just cyborg. Perhaps he was right; as Frank Miller was brought on to write the third film after his draft for Robocop 2 was rejected for being too weird. Robocop 3 has a 4% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Clarice Starling - Jodie Foster/Julianne Moore: Foster apparently found Hannibal's script so sub-par that she turned down playing the character that earned her a second Academy Award. Moore stepped in, but Hannibal was unable to re-create the magic of Silence of the Lambs.

Evelyn (Mummy series) - Rachel Weisz/Maria Bello: Weisz cited problems with the script and the recent birth of her son as reasons she did not want to reprise her role as Evelyn in Mummy: The Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. So, writers made reference to Weisz' take on the role by having Bello portray Evelyn as a successful writer that embellished her part in the previous adventures.
