'Captain America: The Winter Soldier' Begins Production, Reveals First Photo
Marvel Studios has released the first look at the upcoming Captain American film, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, as part of an announcement that production has officially begun.
The film will take place after the events of the introductory film and The Avengers. Deadline reports the Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) has a major role alongside Captain America (Chris Evans). The studio hinted Captain is set "to battle a powerful yet shadowy enemy in present-day Washington, DC."
Quite a bit of the cast has been announced, including the confirmation that Robert Redford will be playing small character Alexander Pierce, a S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent with a specialization in HYDRA (more on this later). Sebastian Stan returns as (spoiler if you were under a rock for the last eight years) Bucky/Winter Soldier. Samuel L. Jackson is said to have quite a bit of screen time when he returns as Nick Fury. Cobie Smulders will appear as Maria Hill, and UFC fighter Georges St-Pierre will play Georges Batroc. Emily VanCamp is set to play the romantic interest, Agent 13. Anthony Mackie will play Sam Wilson, the man who becomes Falcon - the first mainstream African American super hero.
Presumably, the studio doesn't want to waste an actor like Robert Redford, so we expect his character to have a more important role than the comic book. Remember, HYDRA was the organization the Red Skull controlled in the first film, so having Redford's character's expertise will certainly be helpfully.
It's a shame Marvel and FOX can't make nice, seeing as how Wolverine could be facing HYDRA as well in his upcoming film. We can still dream of a Captain/Wolvie team-up, at least.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier is set for an April 4, 2014 release.
