Melissa McCarthy On Controversial 'Elle' Cover: 'I Picked The Coat'

October 22nd, 2013 4:03pm EDT

Melissa McCarthy Elle Melissa McCarthy has responded to controversy surrounding her recently cover of Elle by explaining the cover was her idea in the first place.
The magazine was blasted for covering up the actress in a winter coat for its Women in Hollywood issue, which printed with several different covers. Some people took issue with McCarthy's cover in comparison to Reese Witherspoon's and Shailene Woodley's covers, which showed them in a tight black dress and unitard, respectively.
However, McCarthy has revealed that the coat was her idea for the November issue. She told E!, "What I found so bizarre is I picked the coat. I grabbed the coat. I covered up. I had a great black dress on but I thought, it comes out in November.
"I was so sick of summer. I live in Southern California. I was like, 'Give me a big coat to wear. Give the girl some cashmere!'"
She then joked, "I was just shocked I didn't steal it. Now I think I really should have the coat. I'm petitioning for that coat. Give me that coat. I earned it, damn it!"
Elle had previously said in a statement, "On all of our shoots, our stylists work with the stars to choose pieces they feel good in, and this is no different. Melissa loved this look, and is gorgeous on our cover. We are thrilled to honor her as one of our Women in Hollywood this year."
