Helen Mirren: 'Doctor Who should be a woman'

June 11th, 2013 2:02pm EDT

Doctor Who Dame Helen Mirren has dismissed rumours suggesting she will be the next Doctor Who, but she is adamant a woman should be hired to take the lead role in the iconic British TV show.

The Queen star was reported to be one of the actors suggested to take over the title role from Matt Smith when he steps down at the end of the year (13), but Mirren is adamant she wouldn't consider the job.

When informed that a U.K. bookmaker is offering odds of 25-1 on Mirren's appointment to the role, she tells the Associated Press, "Oh, please - I would put much longer odds on it than that."

However, Mirren wants TV bosses to seriously consider giving the job to a woman, as the role of the Time Lord has previously only ever been played by men.

She adds, "I think it's absolutely time for a female Doctor Who. I'm so sick of that man with his girl sidekick. I could name at least 10 wonderful British actresses who would absolutely kill in that role."
