Insidious: Chapter 2 scares the competition to top U.S. box office

Insidious: Chapter 2 has scared up a storm at the North American box office to debut at number one with an impressive $41 million (£27.3 million).
The supernatural horror, which stars Rose Byrne and Patrick Wilson and cost just $5 million (£3.33 million) to make, haunted film fans from the moment it opened on Friday the 13th to score the second-best September debut in Hollywood history. Only animated movie Hotel Transylvania grossed more with a $42.5 million (£28.33 million) take this time last year (12).
The Insidious sequel's success easily overshadowed Robert De Niro and Michelle Pfeiffer's mob comedy The Family, which grossed $14.5 million (£9.7 million) in its first three days on release.
Last week's (ends08Sep13) biggest movie, Riddick, slipped to third place with $7 million (£4.67 million).
Meanwhile, Lee Daniels' The Butler has continued to attract audiences, with total takings hitting the $100 million (£66.67 million) mark in the U.S. and Canada alone.
