Gravity soars past competition to top U.S. box office

Gravity Space thriller Gravity has soared to the top of the U.S. box office on its opening weekend (04-06Oct13).

The film, starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney, also marks the actors' biggest ever opening with $55.6 million (£37 million).

Animated movie Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 came in second with $21.5 million (£14.3 million) and Justin Timberlake and Ben Affleck's poker drama Runner Runner took third with $7.6 million (£5 million).

Hugh Jackman's Prisoners and Ron Howard's Rush round out the top five with $5.7 million (£3.8 million) and $4.4 million (£2.9 million) respectively.
