Anne Hathaway Oscar winner Anne Hathaway choked back tears as she honoured a doctor who saved a friend's life at a charity gala in Beverly Hills on Sunday night (20Oct13).

The Les Miserables star and her husband Adam Shulman hit the stage at the Victory Fund Champagne Brunch to salute cancer specialist Dr. Beth Karlan, but she had to halt her speech when her emotions got the better of her.

She said, "Dr. Karlan helped a beloved friend of mine... excuse me. She helped a beloved friend of mine battle cancer recently and I couldn’t be more grateful to her.

"Dr. Karlan, you are more than just my friend’s doctor. You’re a friend and ally. And I'm happy to say that together you kicked that cancer's a**."
