House Recap: 'Private Lives'
March 9th, 2010 5:58pm EST
House is back, and considering the last episode was a little bit sleepy (sorry Cuddy!), it was great to see the show back to what it does best. It's interesting that House has kept with this whole no-vicodin thing, and in small ways the character development has really stuck for him. Is he still a jerk? Of course, but a slightly more sensitive jerk. Or he's just getting better at fooling all of us. This episode had a few callbacks to House's addiction, time in the hospital (it did exist!), and his revelation about his real father. Intrigue.
Oh yeah, and there was a patient or something too. Woo. Laura Prepon is the patient of the week, and comedy lovers might know her best as Donna from "That 70's Show." She's kept the washed out blond hair; go back to red, Laura! Anyway, she's a blogger that writes about everything - no matter how personal - on the internet. Her boyfriend is not too happy about it and it causes several arguments for them. Randomly her face starts bruising and her gums are bleeding. Ew. House and crew are on the case!
But since the show isn't really about medicine anymore, she only gets a few scenes intermingled with their personal stories. House is watching too much porn so Wilson takes him to a speed dating night with Chase. Everyone tells Chase how pretty he is, and he doesn't seem to get it until all the women give him their phone numbers regardless of how stupid he seems. I'd love to argue this, but it may be more true than anyone would like to admit. Chase is shaken and starts thinking that maybe everyone - including Cameron - only dated him for his looks. He talks to Thirteen about it and she reassures him that although it may have started that way, Cameron did marry him because she loved him. Probably. This friendship of theirs was actually nice, but the House writers will likely ruin it by getting them together. Thirteen and Taub's friendship has been great, but the laws of television state no two pretty single people can be friends.
On other personal fronts, Wilson was in a porno. Ha ha ha ha ha. Okay that never stops getting funny. He was in college and he actually wasn't in the porn part of it, but his face was in the beginning as a barbarian so House has all kinds of fun with it. Wilson tries to get him back by finding out he's reading a book of religious slogans, which does seem to upset House and confuse everyone. House won't admit his reasons why, but Wilson figures out the author is House's biological father, the one that had an affair with his mother. House was maybe searching for some insight into his genetics to see if there was a glimmer of his weirdness in his super religious dad. Survey says: nope. Aw. That was a nice callback to his abusive father's funeral.
What? There's a patient? I forgot all about that. So she's dying and her pee is brown and no one knows what is going on. She has cancer and then she doesn't have cancer and then she's going to have surgery but she can't. Oh and her boyfriend still fights with her about the blogging - greaaaat timing - and they might break up. But they don't, because he feels bad about her probably dying. And then she has Whipple's disease because of her random switch in diet, and the boyfriend is fine with her blogging. For now, until the fear of her dying goes away and they'll probably be bickering again.
This was a very funny episode. The speed dating was laugh out loud funny, with Wilson getting all the women talking about cancer, House diagnosing his dates, and Chase being a complete moron to prove he isn't just a pretty face. The porno was also pretty amazing - FEAR NOT! - and as long as they keep Chase and Thirteen to a respectful friendship, that could be good for the show. Pshaw, like that's going to happen. There will be a love triangle very soon with Foreman, Chase, and Thirteen no doubt. Yawn. Poor Taub, you still get no love. A side note: Jesse Spencer did a great live chat during the episode last night. Check out his twitter for more from him.
House is on FOX Monday nights at 8 PM EST.
