CBS Unveils A Darker New 'Hawaii Five-O'

July 29th, 2010 2:04pm EDT

Hawaii5O-070610-0002.jpg CBS unveiled its new Hawaii Five-O for the Television Critics Association on July 28 at their fall press tour at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. The new Steve McGarrett played by Alex O’Loughlin is more Jack Bauer than Jack Lord.

“The more flaws you bring to a character, the more balance you give your character, the closer that character moves towards every man,” O’Loughlin said. “If he’s everyman, you can relate to him.”

He’s got a military background, he plays by his own rules, and he’s not always right. O’Loughlin wants to show a lead character who’s not a 100% black and white good guy.

“I refuse to show you anything else. In some of the other work I’ve done, the other bits get cut out. But I never deliver a performance that’s all one thing because that’s inaccurate. It’s not possible in human nature unless you’re Gandhi.”

Even his partner, Danny Williams, walks a fine line. “I think what makes Steve McGarrett and what makes Danny so interesting is they’re a little gray,” said executive producer Peter Lenkov. “There are some flaws in them. That’s what makes them so watchable. They make mistakes. They’re human. Them being real comes across and I think that’s why you gravitate towards these guys. I think we’re fans of flawed heroes. When you see somebody week to week who’s always a winner and always gets his man, it gets boring. We strive for these characters to bring out the best in each other but feel real to an audience.”

It is still Hawii Five-O though. They’ll still say, “Book ‘em, Danno.” “I remember the old show from when I was a kid,” O’Loughlin said. “I remember when the old show was taken off TV 40 years ago. It started 50 years ago. There’s been a lot of changes in television in the way we act, the technology, the special effects and stunts. So it’s not a remake. We’re not picking up where they left off. It’s a reboot and the characters are different. In the old show I didn’t know a lot about the character Jack Lord played. You know a lot about mine. I didn’t look for that to make decisions. I just did my character work based on what these guys wrote.”
