Former Fugees Member Lauryn Hill Is Celebrating Her Release From Prison With A New Single.
The R&B singer was jailed in Connecticut in July after pleading guilty to three charges of failing to file her tax returns between 2005 and 2007.
The 38 year-old star, who is set to leave prison on Friday after completing her three-month sentence, is marking the occasion by releasing a new track, Consumerism, which will also feature on her upcoming album Letters From Exile.
In a post on her Tumblr page, Hill writes, "Consumerism is part of some material I was trying to finish before I had to come in... I felt the need to discuss the underlying socio-political, cultural paradigm as I saw it.
"I haven't been able to watch the news too much recently, so I'm not hip on everything going on. But inspiration of this sort is a kind of news in and of itself, and often times contains an urgency that precedes what happens.
"I couldn't imagine it not being relevant. Messages like these I imagine find their audience, or their audience finds them, like water seeking it's level."
Following her release, Hill will still have to spend a further three months under house arrest and nine months on supervised release.
