May 23rd, 2012 8:52pm EDT

James Doohan The final wish of former Star Trek actor James Doohan was honored on Tuesday when his ashes were released in space.

The actor, who played Starship Enterprise engineer Montgomery Scott on the series and in the first six Star Trek films, died in July 2005 of complications from pneumonia and Alzheimer's disease.

The Vancouver, Canada native keft instructions in his will that he wanted some of his ashes to boldly go where no man has gone before; and on Tuesday a small urn carrying some of the star's remains was sent into the Earth's orbit aboard an unmanned Falcon 9 rocket owned by SpaceX. The ship blasted off from Cape Canaveral, Florida, and also contained the remains of over 300 other folks whose last wishes were to get off this rock.

The Falcon 9 capsule will stay in Earth's orbit for around a year, after which it will begin to re-enter the atmosphere and burn up.
