We've all been Punk'd! Reports on Thursday that Justin Bieber's laptop computer and camera had been stolen while he was performing in Washington state have turned out to be just a hoax -- a viral stunt made up to promote his latest video, "Beauty and a Beat," which features rapper Nicki Minaj.
Biebs, who starred in a recent revival of MTV's hit show created by Ashton Kutcher, opened a new twitter account under the name @gexwy on Wednesday and "illegally" uploaded a couple of videos from the "stolen laptop" to YouTube; taunting himself with messages like "Good job with the password protected @justinbieber. weak."
Bieber shot back, "@gexwy no matter what you have and what you post tomorrow i know my fans wont leave me. screw it. #toostrong."
@gexwy left another message promising that another video from the laptop would be released Friday at noon.
That clip turned out to be the star's new video, which begins with a message reading, "In October of 2012 three hours of personal footage was stolen from musician Justin Bieber. The following footage was illegally uploaded by an anonymous blogger."
But Bieber quickly let fans in on the joke on twitter at release time; writing, "since i was 14 i have had a lot of things said about me, from dying, to taking hormones, to dying again, to stuff about my family... to saying i had a baby with a woman i never even met. nude pics, drugs, my family, my character...but today...today i get to be in on it..."
Shortly before the premiere Nicki tweeted, "I'd be by a computer in 20 mins if i were u..."
Meanwhile, after the video's release @gexwy wrote, "I told you I would post something WORTH watching and talking about @justinbieber @NICKIMINAJ"
