Disney Announces 'Star Wars Episode VII' To Begin Shooting In May; 'Cars' & 'The Incredibles' Sequels Also On The Way
A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away and after the events of Return of the Jedi, Star Wars: Episode VII will take place.
Disney made the announcement via the Star Wars twitter page, writing, "#StarWarsVII begins filming in May! Set 30 years after RoTJ, the film will feature new stars & familiar faces."
So far none of those "familiar faces" have actually been confirmed, but reports say that Carrie Fisher is definitely on board to reprise her role as Princess Leia, while the status of bringing back Mark Hamill and Harrison Ford to the roles of Luke Skywalker and Han Solo, respectively, still remains unclear.
The only confirmed familiar face returning isn't really a face at all -- it's the droid R2-D2, whose counterpart C-3PO hasn't even been mentioned. We don't think any Star Wars film would be complete with bringing Anthony Daniels back to play the golden robot.
"Girls" star Adam Driver has reportedly been cast to take on the role of the film's villain, but the news has yet to be confirmed by Disney and Lucasfilm.
"Rumor has it that almost every actor in the world has been cast in this movie, but so far, the official cast member that we’ve confirmed, the only one, is R2D2. Played by R2D2," Disney chief Bob Iger said at the company’s shareholders meeting on Tuesday.
Some of those rumors include Oscar-winner Lupita Nyong'o, Saoirse Ronan and Michael B. Jordan, who have all met with director J.J. Abrams and casting directors.
Disney also made another big announcement on Tuesday -- another Cars film is on the way, along with the highly-anticipated sequel to The Incredibles.
"It’s official: we’re currently working on new films featuring your favorite characters from The Incredibles and Cars!" the company Tweeted.
"Star Wars: Episode VII" has been slated for a December 18, 2015, release. Our sleeping bags are ready.
