Hollywood Legend Mickey Rooney Dies At 93

Legendary actor Mickey Rooney passed away from natural causes on Sunday at the age of 93.

According to TMZ.com, Rooney had been in ill health at the time of his death.

The veteran actor was born Joseph Yule, Jr., and began his career as part of his parents' vaudeville act when he was just 17 months old. He went on to land bit parts in films after his mother moved him to Hollywood, where he attended the Hollywood Conservatory of Music and Arts, a school for child actors. Some of his classmates included "Wizard of Oz" star Judy Garland, Lana Turner and TV judge Joseph Wapner, the latter of whom would go on to star in the syndicated courtroom show "The People's Court."

Rooney starred in over 300 films, including "National Velvet," opposite Elizabeth Taylor. The film was Taylor's first in a starring role and made her a household name.

The actor played the role of Andy Hardy in 20 films in the "Andy Hardy" series, beginning wiht 1937's "A Family Affair." His most recent on-screen appearances were in 2011's "The Muppets," and as a hilarious butt-kicking security guard in "Night at the Museum" (2006). He starred in dozens of stage productions; and he was nominated for four Oscars from 1940-80. He was the 1939 co-recipient of the Academy's Juvenile Award, sharing the Oscar for "setting a high standard of ability and achievement" with actress deanna Durbin. He also received the Honorary Oscar in 1983.

Rooney was married a whopping eight times, the first of which was to legendary actress Ava Gardner. Rooney separated from his eighth wife, Jan, in May 2013, when they separated.

Three years ago the actor won a lawsuit against Jan's son Chris Aber for elder abuse and was awarded $2.8 million in damages. Aber allegedly skimmed money from his stepfather's bank accounts.

At the time of his death Rooney had a handful of films in the works, including reprising his role in "Night at the Museum 3."
