'Game of Thrones' Season 2 Premiere Event: The 'Ultimate Fan Experience' In Colorado
On March 27th, 2012, Colorado fans of the epic HBO series “Game of Thrones” were treated to an exclusive, limited engagement: The “Ultimate Fan Experience.” This event included a sneak-peek screening of the season 2 premiere, “The North Remembers,” which will air on April 1st, 2012, at 9pm E.T. on HBO.
I was privileged to be in attendance, and I have to say that HBO really knows how to throw a preview party for the Mile High City! This event was the one and only early preview made available to fans, and the invitation list was capped at 100 (plus one guest) for Colorado residents who responded to the call for requests on the official “Game of Thrones” Facebook Fan Page.
“Game of Thrones” Episode 11: A fantastic start to the new season
Without a doubt, the audience that packed the Landmark Theatre in Greenwood Village, Colorado, had very strong reactions to the scenes in the opener of season 2. I don’t want to include any spoilers here, but rest assured that several characters being introduced in the new season of “Game of Thrones” make an appearance in Episode 11, including Melisandre (played by Carice van Houten), and Stannis Baratheon (Stephen Dillane).
The hair styles, sets, and elaborate costumes will be even more impressive in “Game of Thrones” season 2 if the premiere episode is any indication; I was especially wowed by the attire worn by Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey). And because I don’t expect anything less from HBO and the epic cast of the series, I wasn’t surprised to see that the acting – including the budding tension between Cersei and Littlefinger – is completely up-to-par in the season 2 premiere.
Without a doubt, most fans of the “Game of Thrones” series should enjoy this fantastic start to the new season – I know that I did, and so did a room full of 200 fans from the Denver Metro area.
The “Ultimate Fan Experience” from HBO
The sneak-peek event included quite a few fantastic perks for fans in attendance: An invitation to dress-up as a favorite character for a chance to win an iPad 6; an opportunity to have a picture taken “in the land of Westeros,” complete with props appropriate for the era; scratch cards with winners receiving exclusive “Game of Thrones” merchandise; free drinks, popcorn, fountain beverages, and chances to discuss the show while waiting in line for liquor.
Lauren Maske and Jaime Small were two fans in attendance who decided to arrive dressed as a favorite character from the hit HBO show. Maske, who was dressed in medieval garb in red fabric, came as Melisandre the “Red Woman.” Small opted to come as Daenerys Targaryen, complete with a stuffed golden dragon, in garb reminiscent of Dany once she arrives in the Dothraki desert. Although neither lady won the iPad 6 prize – that honor was bestowed upon a gentleman dressed as Patchface – both were kind enough to pose for a photo-op prior to the event.
The Food Bank of the Rockies
Fans who received an invitation to the premiere event were asked to bring a non-perishable food item for the Food Bank of the Rockies, an organization based in Denver that is well known for its hunger-relief programs. Two large barrels were filled nearly to the brim, compliments of the “Game of Thrones” fans in attendance, which made the event even more beneficial for the Mile High City at large.
