13 Going On 30: Celebrities Who Turned Thirty In 2010

November 16th, 2010 5:00pm EST

Zooey Premiere Pop Quiz: What do child stars Christina Ricci, Ben Savage and Eliza Dushku have in common with television host Vanessa Minnillo, Backstreet boy Nick Carter and Tennis Ace Venus Williams? Answer: In 2010, they all celebrated a momentous milestone – turning 30!  It is a decade that many cite as their favorite; a time of self-confidence, empowerment and allegedly, peaking sexuality. Join Starpulse as we raise a glass to 13 fabulous celebrities who rang in their “dirty thirty” this year:

Zooey Deschanel – Jan. 17:   Don’t let the baby-face fool you: Like her sister, ‘Bones’ actress Emily Deschanel, this doe-eyed darling has been cruising castings since adolescence, proving to be quite the multi-talent. Whether comically mixing it up with Will Ferrell in 2003’s ‘Elf,’ warbling about the touch and feel of cotton for national commercials or breaking Joseph Gordon Levitt’s heart in last year’s big screen hit ‘500 Days of Summer,’ Hollywood’s resident vegan cabaret singer – recently married to Death Cab for Cutie’s Ben Gibbard – is sure to surprise and delight in the decade ahead.

Jason Segel – Jan. 18:  Segel is a true Renaissance man: The towering talent of small screen (‘How I met Your Mother’) and big (‘Knocked Up,’ ‘I Love You Man’), Segel is also a writer (he penned the screenplay for ‘The Muppets,’ now filming), producer and notorious exhibitionist (rent ‘Forgetting Sarah Marshall’ for some full-frontal funny). Jason shows us that it’s not only permissible to be juvenile at 30, it’s freakin’ hilarious.

Alicia Keys – Jan. 25: In the last decade, Alicia Keys won 13 Grammys and 5 American Music Awards, delivered a lauded screen performance (‘The Secret Life of Bees’) and earned respect as a passionate philanthropist. This NYC-born musical prodigy, who just capped off her 20’s in a big way - by wedding producer Swizz Beatz and giving birth to their son, Egypt Daoud Dean - is proof-positive that age doesn’t determine “A Woman’s Worth.” Expect the chart-topper’s next 9 years to be both successful and symphonious.

Channing Tatum – Apr. 26: This strapping Alabama boy first became a hot commodity shaking his shimmy in the 2006 hit, ‘Step Up’. He has since solidified his leading man status in weepy rom-coms like ‘Dear John’ and fan-boy flick ‘GI Joe: Rise of the Cobra.’ Even more impressive than his chiseled features and assuredly all-grown-up bod: The former model and martial artist’s devotion to his wife, ‘Step Up’ costar Jenna Dewan (also turning 30 this year). Swoon.

Jessica Simpson – Jul. 10: Back in 2003, when America first fell for this newly-wed naïf, her biggest trouble was differentiating chicken from tuna. What a difference 2556 days make. Through a high-profile divorce from Nick Lachey and other heartbreaks (John Mayer, Tony Romo), career stumbles (‘Major Movie Star,’ anyone?) and unwanted scrutiny (who could forget the high-waisted, chili cook-off mom-jean brouhaha of ‘o9), somehow our busty blonde is still standing (in her Jessica Simpson shoe line, no less). If nothing else, this southern girl has shown resilience the size of her native Texas. With a new engagement ring on her finger and a fresh holiday album, Jessica’s 30’s are looking up… She may even learn how to pronounce “platypus!”

Kristen Bell  - Jul. 18:  No fair: Not only does this Midwestern moppet not look a day older than her alter ego, teenage detective Veronica Mars, she’s also built a burgeoning big screen career to envy (‘Forgetting Sarah Marshall,’ ‘Get Him to the Greek,’) and has found love with actor/comedian fiancé Dax Shepard. Petite and with personality-plus, the devoted dog-lover sings, dances and isn’t shy about showing off her lazy eye on national late-night programs. We don’t need girl-detective skills to know that her starring role - alongside Cher and fellow 30 year-old Christina Aguilera - in the upcoming movie musical ‘Burlesque,’ won’t be her last.

Gisele Bundchen – Jul. 20:  Countless magazine covers; multi-million dollar deals with the likes of Vuitton, Dior, Bulgari, D & G, Valentino and Lanvin; Guinness Book of World Records as “World’s Richest Supermodel”; dated Leonardo DiCaprio; married to Patriots QB Tom Brady; mother to adorable baby boy Benjamin. Before you decide you hate the buxom Brazilian bombshell, consider that she also dedicates a substantial amount of time to AIDS/HIV causes and protecting the Brazilian rainforests. She’s a United Nations Goodwill Ambassador worth $150 million with a 26” waist: 30 has never looked better.  …Yep, still hate her.

Macaulay Culkin – Aug. 26: Once deemed the greatest child star since Shirley Temple, the mischievous mite who charmed worldwide audiences in big screen smashes like ‘My Girl’ and ‘Home Alone’ is all grown up - and largely out of the public eye. A divorce from Rachel Miner (whom he married at 17), paucity in film roles and his desire for a drama-free lifestyle make for rare Macaulay sightings these days. Of course, some would argue that with a fortune of 17 million and a girlfriend like Mila Kunis (‘That 70’s Show’), Culkin never has to leave the house again. Still, not many can deny the once and former box-office titleholder has some acting chops. Perhaps his 30s will mark a comeback for Mack.

Michelle Williams – Sept. 9:  This former WB star has certainly had an eventful 30 years: A child actress who made her debut as wild child Jen Lindley on ‘Dawson’s Creek’, Williams went on to earn an Oscar-nomination for ‘Brokeback Mountain’, fell in love with her leading man Heath Ledger and bore a baby girl, Matilda Rose, only to lose Ledger to an accidental overdose in 2008. Now quietly raising Matilda in Brooklyn, Williams is creating a stir for her NC-17 rated film ‘Blue Valentine’, as well as her alleged relationship with costar, Ryan Gosling (also on this list). Whether good, bad or ugly, the life and career of Michelle Williams is never dull; we can’t wait to see what she does with this decade.

Kim Kardashian – Oct. 21: – Ten years ago, the only Kardashian America knew was Kim’s famous father, the late attorney Robert. We all know the story: In 2007, the leak of an, er, adult tape featuring Kim and her ex Ray-J, propelled the celebutante scenester onto the national stage and boy, did she ever run with it. Playboy spreads, two reality shows, and high-profile romances with athletes Reggie Bush and Miles Austin have made the alluring Armenian a household name. Despite appearing on the current cover of People Magazine alongside the headline, “I thought I’d be Married by Now,” the enterprising businesswoman is doing just fine,  building an empire with sisters Kourtney and Khloe that includes retail franchise Dash, books, workout DVDs and even a Kardashian Sisters Mastercard. Who needs a man when you’re 30, financially secure and fabulous!

Ryan Gosling - Nov. 12: Before he wowed critics in ‘The Believer,’ melted hearts with ‘The Notebook’ and scored an Oscar nod for ‘Half Nelson,’ young Ryan Gosling donned a pair of mouse ears as a cast member of ‘The All New Mickey Mouse Club.’ Just like former “MMC” costars Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake, Gosling has made quite a name for himself as a performer; the cerebral Canadian has been busy carving out a quirky career (don’t miss the one where he falls in love with a blow-up doll) not unlike that other tasty, tortured talent Johnny Depp.  Brooding intensity that will only, well, intensify the older he gets? Sign me up!

Christina Aguilera – Dec. 18: Even a “Genie in a Bottle” couldn’t grant the Grammy-award winning pint-sized powerhouse a successful marriage. But despite the recent news that the former mousketeer-turned-mother is in the process of divorcing hubby Jordan Bratman, don’t cry for that Aguilera. With a rumored new man and the flamboyant ‘Burlesque’ soon to hit the big screen, we’re sure Xtina will hit her share of good notes in this new decade.

Jake Gyllenhaal – Dec. 19: Tap a vein and you’ll find that Jake Gyllenhaal has Hollywood coursing through his veins. The son of both a prominent director and prolific screenwriter, Jake’s sister is Maggie Gyllenhaal (‘Crazy Heart’), his godparents are Jamie Lee Curtis and the late Paul Newman and he himself is godfather to little Matilda Rose Ledger, daughter of his ‘Brokeback Mountain’ costars. Despite being raised among the bright lights, Gyllenhaal has defied the odds and managed to navigate the industry with both class and his trademark self-effacing smile. Currently promoting ‘Love and Other Drugs’ with Anne Hathaway (out November 24th), the boy with the baby-blues - once Reese Witherspoon’s younger paramour -has been recently linked with Taylor Swift. Hmmm… We love the career direction, but perhaps in his 30’s; our handsome little Jakey will make an age-appropriate girlfriend selection?

In a time where some of the hottest working celebrities are over 40, it’s not hard to believe ‘30’ is the new ‘20’. Some stars turning the “new 20” next year? Justin Timberlake, Beyonce, Paris Hilton, Nicole Richie, Britney Spears, Jennifer Hudson, Jessica Alba & Natalie Portman. Until then, enjoy each candle on your own birthday cake and stay tuned to Starpulse!
