Review: 'Hesher' 'Two Jews On Film' Agree This Off Beat Indie Is A Must See (Video)
'Hesher' directed by Spencer Susser stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Hesher. There are several things that Hesher likes a lot, loud music, pornography and burning stuff to the ground. He brings all of his favorite things into the lives of 13 year old TJ (Devin Brochu) and his father Paul (Rainn Wilson) when he unexpectedly takes up residence in their garage, uninvited.
Told through the eyes of TJ, HESHER is a dark fairy tale about an eccentric unhinged drifter who appears out of nowhere to help a struggling family deal with loss. TJ and his father are simply going through the motions of their daily life, quietly grieving each day...The father can barely get out of bed..T.J. gets beaten up by a bully at school daily.
Hesher arrives like a force of nature not stopping for anything or anyone in his path.
Paul is so grief stricken that he can't muster the strength to evict this strange squatter from his home and soon, the long haired tattooed Hesher becomes a fixture in the household.
Hesher befriends TJ's grandmother (the wonderful Piper Laurie) who lives with them. Grandma is dying and she's extremely lonely - the family is too busy with their own pain to even notice. But Hesher does. He shows Grandma appreciation for her cooking...he listens to all her stories and even agrees to go on a walk with her.
T. J's just as lonely when he starts to develop a relationship with Nicole (Natalie Portman) a supermarket cashier. who comes to his rescue one day. She's his first friend and of course like all 13 year olds, he falls in love with her.
Hesher means lover of heavy metal music. The character Hesher is a mystic...He IS heavy metal...Volatile, menacing, vulgar, rude and he doesn't give a damn what anyone thinks of him. Hesher is also one of the most interesting, complex and original characters I've seen in a film in a very long time. Joseph Gordon-Levitt kills it as this ultimate wise bad ass.
"Hesher' will take you on a trip...a really good trip.
"The Two Jews' On Film' were actually on the same page with this one and gave it 4 1/2 bagels out of 5...with the works. 'Hesher' opens in theaters, Friday May 13, 2011.
