Lovable 70s pop duo Captain & Tennille are divorcing after 39 years of marriage.
Singer Toni Tennille, full name Cathryn Antoinette Tennille, 73, filed for divorce from Daryl Dragon, aka the 'Captain,' 71, in an Arizona courthouse last Thursday, according to RumorFix.com.
A posting on the duo's website also confirmed the news.
"Until Thursday, January 16th, 2014, when Toni Tennile met with a DIVORCE ATTORNEY, in Phoenix, AZ, everything relating to THE CAPTAIN & TENNILLE appeared to the public as them being the ideal model for a 'rock-solid' married pair," the message read.
"But almost all people naturally evolve over time, & sometimes hidden feelings start to be uncovered when one may read, just a little more into (the popularized, substitute heading appearing just below), stating, for instance: 'MUSIC HAS KEPT THEM TOGETHER.'"
TMZ.com reports that the news comes as a surprise to Dragon, who spoke to the website on Wednesday.
"I don't know why she filed," he said. "I gotta figure it out for myself first."
Dragon added that they are still living together.
The couple married in 1974, a year before their hit "Love Will Keep Us Together," written by singer Neil Sedaka, topped the Billboard chart and won the Grammy for Record of the Year in 1976. They also had a short-lived TV series from 1976-77.
