Oprah Gets A Surprise From Paul Simon During Emotional Final Show

May 25th, 2011 11:05pm EDT

Oprah Winfrey Veteran musician Paul Simon helped Oprah Winfrey bring her hit talk show to an emotional end after 25 years on air by recording a special song especially for her.

The media mogul wrapped up 25 years of The Oprah Winfrey Show by recalling the highs and lows of her talk show career on the grand finale, which aired in the U.S. on Wednesday. Viewers were taken to commercial breaks to the sounds of Twenty-Five Years, a ballad Simon wrote to mark Winfrey's momentous occasion.

She fought back tears as she took fans on a trip down memory lane, with Winfrey calling her fans her "safe harbor" as she reflected on her childhood in rural Mississippi.

She said, "It is no coincidence that a lonely little girl, who felt not a lot of love, even though my parents and grandparents did the best they could, it is no coincidence that I grew up to feel a genuine kindness, affection, trust and validation from millions of you all over the world."

The star, who grew up wanting to be a teacher, admitted the finale was her "last class from this stage", although she admitted she learned more from her guests and viewers than she could ever have imagined.

But Winfrey stopped short of bidding farewell to her viewers for good, signing off by saying: "I won't say goodbye. I'll just say, until we meet again."
