Henry Rollins Celebrates The West Memphis 3 Release

Punk icon Henry Rollins is celebrating on tour in Scotland after learning the West Memphis 3 are free men in Arkansas.

The former Black Flag and Rollins Band frontman was among the celebrities campaigning for the release of Damien Echols, Jessie Misskelley and Jason Baldwin, who were jailed for the murder of three boy scouts in 1993.

The three men have maintained their innocence ever since they were jailed for life in 1994, and on Friday they were released from prison after pleading guilty to the crime during an emergency hearing.

But, after walking free from Craighead County Courthouse in Arkansas, Echols and Misskelley, Jr. told reporters that they had served 18 years behind bars for a crime they did not commit.

Baldwin claimed he was against the idea of taking the plea deal because he didn't want to admit guilt, but did so to save Echols from death row.

The news delighted Rollins, who organized a benefit album for the West Memphis 3. He told EW.com, "It is a good day. My joy at hearing the news is however tinged with frustration that it took so long and that there is a person or persons who still need to be brought to justice."

Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder and Dixie Chicks star Natalie Maines were at the courthouse in Jonesboro, Arkansas for the hearing and subsequent celebrations as the three men were released.
