Calle 13 Dominate The 2011 Latin Grammys With Nine Wins
Puerto Rican hip-hop duo Calle 13 made Latin Grammy Awards history in Las Vegas on Thursday night by picking up nine honors, including the coveted Album of the Year prize for Entren Los Que Quieran.
Stepbrothers Residente and Visitante, who led the nominations with 10, previously shared the record for most wins - five - with Juanes and Juan Luis Guerra.
The duo opened the show at the Mandalay Bay Hotel theatre with the performance of the night as the rappers teamed up with the Venezuela youth orchestra, Orquesta Sinfonica Simon Bolivar, and superstar conductor Gustavo Dudamel for a rendition of their Latinoamerica hit, which later earned the band Record and Song of the Year.
It was then all Calle 13 for the rest of the evening - they picked up trophies for Urban Music Album, Alternative Song, Best Video and Tropical Song among their haul.
Also celebrating at the 12th annual Latin Grammys ceremony, which was hosted by singer/actress Lucero and Chilean actor Cristian De La Fuente, were Ruben Blades y Seis Del Solar (Best Salsa Album), Shakira (Best Female Pop Vocal Album for Sale El Sol), Sie7e (Best New Artist), Franco De Vita (Best Male Pop Vocal Album), Jorge y Lena (Pop Album by a Duo or Group with Vocal) and Mana (Rock Album for Drama Y Luz).
Shakira, who was honored with the Latin Recording Academy's Person of The Year award earlier this week, Mana, Wisin y Yandel and Los Tigres del Norte were among the performers at the ceremony.
