15 Celebrities Who Chopped Off Their Hair
August 13th, 2012 3:00pm EDT
A truly daring star experiments with her hair for a film role or just because she wants to mix it up. But not everyone in Hollywood is so adventurous (could you see Angelina Jolie opting for a pixie cut? Probably not.)
Over the weekend, Miley Cyrus shocked fans by chopping off her newly blonde hair. Fans berated her on Twitter for taking the chance, and she responded with comments such "feel so happy, pretty, and free."
It is certainly liberating for a famous woman who is identified with a certain look to switch it up. In 2010, "Harry Potter" star Emma Watson revealed her newly shorn locks on Facebook. She wrote, "Dear all. Cut my hair off a few days ago. Feels incredible. I love it. I've wanted to do this for years and years."
And while many actresses wind up growing their hair back, she's still sporting her short look two years later.
Check out other celebrities who have taken the short hair plunge...
Brunette beauty Anne Hathaway chopped her hair off in early 2012 for the film "Les Miserables."
Natalie Portman had no problem shaving her entire head for "V For Vendetta" in 2005. She grew it back.
Rihanna cut off all her hair on a whim in 2006. She later said, "I was in Paris and I fancied a change of hairstyle. I had my long locks cut off and came away with this cute bob. Someone from my record company saw me and said, 'It looks nice but it's just not you. We'll have to put extensions in.' I was completely crushed. That's when I realized things had to change. I make my own decisions now."
Rihanna kept her short hair for several years and has had fun experimenting with several shades and styles ever since.
Michelle Williams dabbled with short hair in 2007 and in 2010 made the pixie cut her permanent style. In 2011 she told Elle UK, "I've really grown into it - I feel like myself with short hair. And it's been a really long time since I had long hair, five years..."
Rooney Mara cut her hair into a severe banged look for the film "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo." She didn't think she'd like the style as much as she did and wound up keeping it short after filming was completed.
In 2010, Hayden Panettiere chopped her blonde locks, but she wound up growing them back.
In 1999, Keri Russell cut her long curly hair for a story arc on the second season of "Felicity," causing major backlash among fans. The media blamed the show's ratings drop on her haircut.
Evan Rachel Wood She rocked a cropped 'do at the True Blood season 4 premiere in summer 2011. She hasn't parted with the hairstyle yet.
In early summer 2012, Portia De Rossi debuted her new short 'do with long, sideswept bangs.
Vanessa cut off her long locks in summer 2011 to appear in the film "Gimme Shelter" about a homeless pregnant teenager. The new 'do showed off the butterfly tattoo on the back of her neck.
Ashlee Simpson has rocked short hair for so long, it's tough to remember what she looked like before that (and before the nose job). Maybe this will remind you:
Bald (and sometimes green) is beautiful for Jada Pinkett & Will Smith's daughter Willow, who shaved and dyed her hair in early 2012.
Ginnifer Goodwin began sporting a short haired 'do in 2009 and hasn't looked back.
