Mackenzie has Cherokee and Jewish ancestry. Her family moved from South Carolina to Los Angeles when she was 4. Her first roles were commercials for brands such as Nike.
Mackenzie's stepsister, Katelyn Salmont, was featured twice on 7th Heaven. She played a girl with cystic fibrosis, which Salmont suffered from in real life. After a double lung transplant, Katelyn was featured on the show again to spread awareness. Sadly, she died in 2008 due to pnuemonia. Just like her character in the show, Mackenzie developed a fondness for riding horses. By the time she was in high school she was a competitive show jumper.
Mackenzie has had little work outside of 7th Heaven, although she appears on TV shows and movies from time to time. She was a guest star on Secret Life of an American Teenager for four episodes. After only working on 3 films since 2008, she has three more due to release in 2013: Nightcomer, Ghost Shark, and Beneath. Ghost Shark will air on SciFi and Beneath will premiere on Chiller TV.
