Davis was born in Schenectady, New York, and raised in Erie, Pennsylvania; and she has an identical twin sister named Harriet.

She graduated from the University of Michigan in 1948 with a drama degree but had originally enrolled in the school's pre-med program. She changed her major after seeing her brother Evans' performance in the play "Oklahoma."

"The Brady Bunch" wasn't Davis's first successful TV series. She starred in 112 episodes of "The Bob Cummings Show" from 1955-59, for which she won two Emmy awards.

She's mostly made appearances reprising the role of Alice in several Brady revivals and spinoffs, including a cameo as a trucker named "Schultzy" (the same name as her character on "The Bob Cummings Show") in 1995's "The Brady Bunch Movie."
