As rumors swirl about his marriage to Miranda Lambert, country music superstar and Voice coach Blake Shelton opens up in this week’s issue of People about how they make it work and keep their love alive. Since their wedding two years ago, they’ve had to get used to living under the glare of the spotlights, and the tabloid rumors that come with it. From week to week, either their marriage is in ruins (She’s lonely and drinking! He has a wandering eye! She’s jealous of his Voice co-star Shakira!) or they’re having a baby.
Shelton, whose first marriage to Kaynette Williams ended in divorce – is dead serious about making his union to Lambert last. Their No. 1 rule: Total honesty means there’s no need for jealousy. “[I tell Miranda], ‘I have nothing to hide from you.’ That’s always been our policy: ‘Here’s my phone. Go through it,’” he says. “That’s really the kind of trust we have. There are no secrets. [I’ll say,] ‘Go dig through my drawers or my computer if you feel like you need to.’ And that’s been a really good thing, because I don’t want her to ever have any doubts.” And he readily admits the potential for jealousy goes both ways. “I guarantee you,” Shelton tells PEOPLE, “if I saw some guy flirting with my wife, it would p- - - me off.” Of course, he adds, “I haven’t seen a man brave enough to do that – mostly because I think they’d be afraid of her reaction!”
And when that fiery reaction is aimed at him, Shelton says, “it really is important to work things out all the way through, not just put a Band-Aid on it.” He adds that with each passing day, he’s learning to be a better husband. “I’ve got a way better handle on it,” he says. “I know what her insecurities are and how to be there for her.”
Shelton admits that he’s contemplating one day expanding the Shelton-Lambert brood beyond their pack of dogs. “I’m thinking about a family,” he says. Their two years of marriage have helped him prepare for their next chapter. “Learning to not be selfish is what has changed in me the most since being married. I’m thinking on behalf of someone else [now],” he says. “Just like I hope she’s doing with me.”
