Rooney Mara To Star In 1950s Lesbian Love Story 'Carol'
Rooney Mara has joined the cast of Carol. The Girl With A Dragon Tattoo star is replacing Mia Wasikowska and will star alongside renowned actress Cate Blanchett in the Todd Haynes-directed adaptation of Patricia Highsmith's novel The Price of Salt.
Hayne is "thrilled" to have Rooney onboard the project, a 1950s lesbian love story, that marks his first directorial since I'm Not There, which also starred Blanchett and the late Heath Ledger.
In a written statement, Haynes, said: "We're over the moon to have Rooney on board, I've been a tremendous admirer of her work from the beginning, so the thought of bringing her together with Cate on screen is thrilling, to say the least."
Elizabeth Karlsen of Number 9 productions added: "It's a testament to Todd Haynes as a director and the quality of the script that we have managed to attract this exciting caliber of actor."
Mara will star as a young woman unfulfilled in her job at a department store in New York who is bought together with Blanchett's character, a wife trapped in an unhappy marriage with a wealthy husband.
The Weinstein Company picked up U.S. distribution rights to the script and shooting is due to begin in spring 2014.
