'The Middle' Recap: College Acceptance Plot Makes For A Tense Episode

March 26th, 2015 9:19am EDT
THe Middle
“Why are you embarrassed that there’s a fun side to you?”

The Hecks go through a lot of hell just about every episode, but there is usually no need to worry that things are not going to work out by the end of the half hour. This is the formula of pretty much every sitcom ever, but “The Middle” has managed to make the stakes feel higher and realer than on most other shows. There actually have been episodes in which some things did not work out, at least not in a traditional sense. Thus, the college acceptance plot of “The Waiting Game” felt tenser than it had any right to.

'Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.' Review: Love In The Time Of Hydra

March 25th, 2015 10:17am EDT
'Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.' Recap: A Tale of Two S.H.I.E.L.D.s
Starting "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." off with a "Pulp Fiction" reference is always a good omen. "Love in the Time of Hydra" opens and Ward and Agent 33 are sitting in a classic middle American diner. There's talk of pumpkin pancakes and pecan syrup.

Then they pull out a couple of pistols and hold the place up. All we needed was for Ward to call 33 "Honey Bunny" and the homage would have been complete (and too obvious, probably).

The chunk of "Love in the Time of Hydra" willing to go bold with an elongated "Pulp Fiction" gag is also the chunk that's by far the most exciting. Ward and 33 are g...

'Community' Recap: 'Basic Crisis Room Decorum'

March 25th, 2015 7:20am EDT
Community
The Audacity of Hope

In its earlier seasons, “Community” distinguished itself among typical sitcoms with its determined focus on character development. The study group was various forms of broken, and Greendale was positioned as a place for them to work out their issues and become better people. The show followed through on this determination in a way that was deeply satisfying.

Six seasons in, “Community” is still concerned about allowing its characters to grow, but it is also intent on emphasizing what works best, and that can mean maintaining the status quo. “Basic Crisis Room Deco...

‘Grey’s Anatomy’: Has Derek's Cheating History Repeated Itself

March 20th, 2015 9:51am EDT
‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Recap: Derek Returns A Cheater
If you’re looking for a definite confirmation that Derek has a D.C. side chick—Meredith already paints a descriptive snapshot of her—we might just get it.

But not in “Don’t Dream It’s Over” because as much as you can see a dress is blue and black, some people will view it as brown and white. In other words, things are never what they seem to be, even when it looks like they are. Including a mystery woman playing secretary on Derek’s phone. Yet, to Meredith it’s abundantly clear: he’s cheating. Her theory: “when you hear hoofbeats, think horses, not zebras. It means that the most obvious an...

5 Memorable Moments From 'Scandal' Last Night

March 20th, 2015 9:27am EDT
'Scandal' Recap: 5 Memorable Moments From 'It's Good to Be Kink'
“It’s Good to Be Kink” is as close to return to form as Scandal can possibly get. It had everything that could make up an incredible Scandal episode: a campy guest star, a fun case of the week that had high stakes for a regular character, shocking murders, and Olivia hooking up with an extremely attractive man. Add the fact that Fitz’s presence in the episode was minimal, the episode makes us hopeful that the Scandal writers are still figuring out what works and what doesn’t.

Bringing back the B613 plot was a massive backslide for the show, which was making huge strides in getting away fro...

March 18th, 2015 11:31am EDT
'Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.' Recap: Skye Makes A Truly Terrible Supe
For everyone who enjoys a full two hours of comic book TV on Tuesday nights ("The Flash" + "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D."), "One of Us" was in an unfortunate position. "The Flash" put out a 10/10 grand slam of an episode, and "Agents" is left dwindling in its shadow.

But at least "One of Us" brought lots of new material to the table. Cal's starting up a team of supervillains and May's ex-husband Andrew (Blair Underwood) debuts as Skye's So You've Been Granted Devastating Superpowers guidance counselor.

And at least one of those things is really, really great.

Let's get the weak one out of the ...
