Taylor Swift Debuts Commandingly At #1

November 6th, 2014 10:09am EST
Taylor Swift 1989
Unsurprisingly, Taylor Swift debuts commandingly at #1 – shocker! The matter wasn’t if she’d hit #1, but just how much would the ubiquitous musician sell, particularly in a year where albums sales have sucked. What is most surprising is that Swift has the best week of her career, selling 1,287 million copies of 1989 its first week. Her previous two albums both sold over a million their first week, hitting with Speak Now moving 1.047 million and Red moving 1.208 million. Yep, Taylor Swift definitely rules the world – it’s been proven!

After previous having no platinum albums from 2014...

Cutting straight to the chase, the post-Taylor Swift release week is exactly what you would expect it to be… quiet! Why- because everyone knows Taylor rules the world – more importantly the Billboard 200 – and the Taylor machine won’t stop after just one week. 1989 will likely hold off any of the albums below from coming anywhere near that number one spot – she’s just commercial like that. That said here are albums to check out this week, led by Calvin Harris’ Motion.

1) Calvin Harris, Motion (Columbia)

Motion follows up Harris’ 2012 album, 18 Months. Harris is best known for prod...

Slipknot Tops The Billboard 200: This Week in Music

Slipknot Tops The Billboard 200: This Week in Music
As prognosticated, popular masked metal band Slipknot debut ‘at the penthouse’ on the Billboard 200 selling 132,000 copies of their latest album, .5: The Gray Chapter. The Gray Chapter is Slipknot’s first new album since 2008, where All Hope Is Gone also landed at the top spot. Of course, like everyone else, Slipknot’s numbers were down – over 100,000 copies down to be exact. Still 132,000 copies is sound in an age where few albums are selling particularly well.

ATL rapper T.I. had a respectable week, selling 80,000 copies of Paperwork. The reason it’s respectable isn’t because of hi...

CD Review: A Failed Apology - 'This Past Year'
On their latest EP soiree This Past Year, pop-punk merchants A Failed Apology are, at times, more punk than pop (“This Past Year...,” “Say It, I Love You”) thanks to punchy guitars and driving rhythms, though there are instances when the pop outweighs the punk (“Keep Your Head Up,” “The Way I Think Of You”) due to severe bouts of call-and-response vocals and unavoidably catchy hooks (the Knuckle Punk and Real Friends shout out in “Keep Your Head Up” is just the icing on the cake). Just as the band did with “Goodbye” on their previous EP The Weekend, A Failed Apology turns down the lights an...
